Blue35 is located at 35 Oakes SW in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the former New Hotel Mertens, originally built in 1914 as the city’s first modern fire-resistant hotel:
“Becoming every year a more and more important industrial and commercial center, as well as a terminal point for railroads, the business interests of Grand Rapids have increased by leaps and bounds and its transient population has become of a magnitude which has been a constantly growing tax upon the capacity of its hotels. This it has devolved upon men of enterprise, courage and confidence in the city’s development to supply hostelries for the accommodation of the city’s guests, and one of these men in recent years was Charles H. Mehrtens, who built the New Hotel Mertens.
Charles H. Mehrtens was born in the province of Hanover, Germany in 1857, and came to the United States at the age of fourteen years, locating at Sand Lake, Mich., where he worked in the shingle mills for a time. He was industrious and ambitious, carefully saved his earnings, and eventually engaged in a business on his own account, in 1883, having as partners in his milling enterprise a Mr. Kinney and his brother, George Mehrtens. This association continued for about five years, when Mr. Mehrtens went to White Cloud, Mich., and had his first experience in hotel keeping, purchasing the Hotel Atlantic and Pacific, which he conducted successfully for about fourteen years. This was followed by one and one-half years in the same line at Albion, Mich., a short period at Detroit, and five years at Manistee, Mich., where he conducted Dunham House. Coming then to Grand Rapids, he took over the Crathmore Hotel. Of which he was the proprietor for seven years, and at the end of which time he lived retired for one year, and when the New Hotel Mertens was finished he again took up business activities.
He did not live long enough to enjoy the success which greeted his last venture, as his death occurred, Aug. 7. 1914.
Mr. Mehrtens was a man who had an excellent standing in business circles in whatever community his activities were centered, and he was a citizen of public spirit.” (page 263)
“Charles M. Luce, present proprietor of the Hotel Mertens, was born at Battle Creek, Mich., Dec. 2, 1883…This hotel, at the corner of Oakes and Commerce Streets, was thrown open to the public, Jan. 6, 1914. It is a fire-proof structure, sanitary in every particular, 100×50 feet in dimensions, and has eight floors and 133 rooms, forty rooms being with bath.
The house has become extremely popular among those of the traveling public who appreciate real comfort, an excellent cuisine and attentive service, and who know that their every requirement will e gladly and intelligently catered to.” (page 237)

Blue35 members (those individuals or companies who have a current lease at Blue 35) do receive priority booking for available meeting and conference rooms, however, non-members are more than welcome to utilize meeting and conference rooms.
How do I become a member?
Weekly, monthly, 6 month and annual memberships are available.
Can I utilize Blue35 for just one day?
Yes: we have coworking stations that can be used for the day (8:00 am – 5:00 pm).

Tenant Build-out Availability
Floors 2 – 4 of Blue35 are dedicated to private tenant build-out where team members and organizations can convene to think, discuss, and do.
Each floor has 6,300 square feet including lobby and bathrooms, and the layout allows for single-floor users as well as multiple (2-4) users.
Members on these floors enjoy invitations to Blue35-only educational, networking, and social events; 24/7 access to the building customized for your employees and guests; directory signage in the main lobby, and more.
The space itself may be delivered turnkey in order for teams to quickly establish themselves and simplify the move-in and build-out process.
Single Offices – Team Stations – Coworking
The 5th floor is a unique blend of two types of offices completely furnished with the latest Haworth office solutions: half of the floor is outfitted for the individual who requires four solid walls and a door for complete privacy, while the other half features innovative work spaces that allow for privacy and controlled interaction with others.
Leases for the 5th floor range from just one week to a year.
The floor features two shared private meeting rooms outfitted with Haworth’s dynamic Workware technology, an executive lounge, and a shared copier/fax/scanner.
Members stationed on this floor are granted access to the shared community kitchen located on the 6th floor, and receive special members rates when reserving meeting rooms, conference spaces and Bluescape labs on floors 7 and 8, and the rooftop deck.
Services and amenities provided to 5th floor members include on-site hospitality staff; free coffee, tea, and water; catering coordination; basic office supplies; high-speed Wi-Fi; mail and package service; 24/7 building access; invitations to Blue35-only educational, networking, and social events; building directory signage; and more.
Team Stations – Coworking
Providing an energetic environment, the 6th floor is a vibrant coworking space ideal for individuals and small teams seeking to interact and work alongside people from different companies.
The floor is fully furnished with the latest office environments available from Haworth, and includes single coworking desk, team stations, and casual breakout areas.
Leases for the 6th floor range from just one week to a year, and daily guest passes are also available.
The 6th floor features a small private conference room complete with Haworth Workware, a shared copier/fax/scanner, and community kitchen. Members stationed on the 6th floor receive special member rates when reserving meeting rooms, conference spaces and Bluescape Labs on floors 7 and 8, and the rooftop deck.
Short and long term lease options are available.

Conference – Meeting Space – Bluescape Labs
The 7th floor – in combination with the 8th floor – accommodates larger groups for meetings, strategy sessions, conferences, board meetings, and more. Four spacious rooms can host between 24 – 32 individuals and are equipped with Haworth Workware presentation technology, flexible furniture, and endless possibilities. A smaller conference room can accommodate 12 people and offers floor to ceiling windows.
The 8th floor, boasting some of the best views in Grand Rapids, offers 5 unique meeting environments equipped with Haworth Workware. These spaces are designed for critical analysis, creative brainstorming, and team training. This floor also includes an executive lounge area to meet or relax. Groups of up to 50 can utilize these spaces.
